Labyrinth was a large-scale multimedia installation created by Hristo Yordanov in collaboration with artist and curator Angelina Galanska (Angie). Presented at the Centre for Contemporary Art – Ancient Bath (Banya Starinna), Plovdiv, in March 2005, the project transformed the exhibition space into an immersive architectural environment that combined light, sound, video, and participatory experience.
Structured as a navigable spatial system, the installation invited visitors to move through a geometric maze designed to challenge perception, orientation and decision-making. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, Labyrinth functioned as an open framework in which each participant constructed a unique experience through movement, interaction, and choice.
Developed at a time when interactive and multimedia art practices were still emerging in Bulgaria, the project explored the relationship between physical space, mediated reality and human behaviour. Through sensory disorientation and active participation, visitors became performers within the work itself, transforming the traditional role of the spectator into that of an engaged participant.
Concept
Labyrinth explores the idea of life as a system of choices, uncertainties and constructed realities. Built as a large-scale geometric structure occupying the exhibition hall, the installation proposed a physical and psychological journey through a space of continuous decision-making.
Visual projections, sound environments, light interventions and conceptual elements were combined to create moments of disorientation and discovery. The visitor entered a situation where familiar points of reference were deliberately destabilised, encouraging new associations, unexpected encounters and alternative ways of perceiving space.
Rather than offering a predetermined meaning, the work operated as an experiential framework. Each movement through the installation generated a unique sequence of events, turning visitors into active participants whose decisions shaped their individual experience.
Labyrinth reflects on the contemporary condition of navigating increasingly mediated environments. The project asks how perception is formed, how choices emerge, and how individuals locate themselves within complex systems of information, social structures and lived reality.
