Pulse Performance
Projection of sound-reactive animations and contemporary dance, 2022, London

Pulse is a contemporary performance work blending digital art, psychedelic sound, heartbeats and the pulse of human emotion. Conceived as a meeting point between the body and the machine, the work places a live dancer in direct dialogue with a generative visual system that responds in real time to sound – creating an immersive environment where movement, light and rhythm become inseparable.
The performance brings together two distinct artistic languages: the physical vocabulary of contemporary dance and the algorithmic precision of sound-reactive digital animation. Neither dominates. Instead, they pulse together – the dancer’s movement influencing the visual field, the visual field reflecting and amplifying the emotional arc of the choreography.

About the work
Pulse was created and performed by Jiaying Gao (dancer) and Hristo Yordanov (author, visuals and sound), with additional sound composition by Krasimir Kostadinov (Gatof).
The visual component was built using custom sound-reactive animation software – projections that respond directly to the frequency, amplitude and rhythm of the live sound score. The result is a visual landscape that breathes with the performance rather than simply accompanying it.
The work draws on themes of human pulse – biological, emotional and technological – asking what it means to be present in a body in an age of digital mediation. The heartbeat is both the most ancient human rhythm and the most universal digital signal: the binary pulse of on and off, presence and absence.
